He chose to stay when he could have walked away. In Menzoberranzan, that is the most dangerous thing a Baenre can do. In the end, the world remembered only the warrior who died chasing glory — but those who knew him believed his motivations were not as simple as the city assumed.
Background
Tiago Baenre is a swordsman of House Baenre — skilled, composed, and accustomed to moving through dangerous places without being noticed. He is not a soft creature of politics; he is a blade kept deliberately sharp. Baenre blood runs hot with predator instinct, and Tiago has always known exactly what he is.
He did not expect to become something else as well.
The Story
The Mycarn Delve
Tiago was watching from the shadows when Saribel Xorlarrin's scouting party triggered an ancient Netherese ward at the Mycarn Delve. The explosion killed her companions. He acted without deliberation — a ripple of invisible magic enveloped her as a cocoon before the blast wave could take her.
He tended her wound over three days in a shallow cave near the collapsed pass. She told him to leave. He did not. He made no fire, gathered lichen, kept vigil, fed her dry rations. When her fever raged, it was his hands that cooled her brow. When she trembled, it was his cloak that wrapped around her shoulders.
He told her: "I test how closely I can walk behind death without being noticed."
By the fifth night, it had become something else.
Velatha's Threat
Neither Tiago nor Saribel knew that her sister Velatha had learned of the pregnancy — claimed Lolth had shown her in dreams. Saribel handled Velatha alone, without telling Tiago. He was not present for it.
The Birth
He found Saribel on the hidden ledge above Donigarten — their meeting place, beyond the patrol routes — in labour and alone. She had not sent word. "I didn't know if I could trust anyone. Even you."
He fell to his knees beside her. He did not mock her. He did not calculate. He stayed.
He worked beside her through the birth — hands that had always been skilled with a sword, now trembling.
When the child came, he looked down at him and said: "He's perfect."
The Decision
"I cannot keep him," Saribel said. Tiago did not argue.
"Then we must protect him," he said.
He reached out to Jarlaxle — who owed him a favour — and arranged for Jarlaxle to take the child away from Menzoberranzan entirely. It was Tiago's initiative, not Jarlaxle's. Jarlaxle was called in as a debt.
What Happened After
Personality
Tiago was a predator who discovered he could be something else without ceasing to be a predator. He was not soft. He was not reformed. He made choices — to stay, to help, to arrange safety for a child he could easily have denied — that were not kindness in the drow sense. They were something harder to name.
He told Saribel: "I thought life was name and honour. Position. Power. But it's not. Not entirely. It is also this. Quiet. Breathing. Surviving."
That clarity, the recognition of what mattered beyond the city's measure, was also the thing that made him dangerous to himself. Doubt is not freedom in Menzoberranzan. In a world that demanded he perform his role without hesitation, the man who began to question it had only one way to silence that uncertainty: prove himself absolutely, or stop trying entirely.
He chose the duel. Whether that was pride, a test, or something closer to surrender — no one who knew him well has ever been entirely certain.
