Summary
The Compass of Embers accidentally transports Roland, Kavu, Haldak, and Kefkas from inside a Tarrasque in the Underdark to Flamemeet — Kavu's home village in the Dragonspine Mountains. Caladorn contacts Kavu via Sending and reveals the terrifying truth: there are now two versions of the party — one in Flamemeet, one still in the Underdark approaching a village. The compass is counting down from 72 hours. Kavu reunites emotionally with Killzara, a childhood friend he hasn't seen in seven years, who warns that he has "picked a cursed time to come home." Haldak's Arcana check confirms the party is three days in the past relative to their other selves, and any contact with their past selves risks creating an infinite timeline paradox. The session ends with the party discovering cultists kidnapping civilians at the Red Dragon Inn and Kavu opening combat with a 4th-level Command spell.
Key Events
Compass Activation — Arrival in Flamemeet
The party popped into existence in Flamemeet's market square in various states of disorientation — except for Haldak, who arrived unfazed, "like Doctor Who."
Kavu recognized his home immediately: "This place looks familiar... I know this place! I just, I missed home, and I wanted to see home, and everything was horrible."
The party quickly realized they were missing half their companions — Othorion, Lireal, Cassidhe, Stool, and Prince Derendil were nowhere to be found, presumably still inside the Tarrasque.
Caladorn's Sending Spells
Caladorn contacted Kavu telepathically twice. The first message: "What in all the nine hells did you do, Kavu?"
As the sending connected, a rip in spacetime appeared in the night sky over Flamemeet — showing an alien planet with a ring system and illuminated cities.
The second message delivered the critical information:
"I am done wasting spell slots getting half conversations. I am on my way. I will see you in three days."
And the revelation: "There are two of you. Two of me are watching two of you. One of you is where you are now. The other one is in the Underdark approaching a village."
Reunion with Killzara
A female kobold with red scales and emerald eyes spotted Kavu in the market:
"Kavu? Kavu! Kavu Flamekeeper! By Koth's eternal flame, you're alive!"
She embraced him. It had been seven years since Kavu left Flamemeet. Killzara noticed he had grown much taller and told him he had become legendary in the region. She pulled him aside privately and warned:
"My friend, you have picked a cursed time to come home."
The northern passes were in bad shape. Something was wrong in the Dragonspine Mountains.
Temporal Paradox — Three Days in the Past
Haldak cast Arcana with advantage (rolled 18 despite exhaustion) and confirmed: the party is three days in the past. On Hammer 12th, their other selves were with the princess on their way to the Dark Lake — where they would soon summon demons.
"If we influence any of our decisions of our past selves, maybe even future selves, it's possible that a paradox could happen... you'll be stuck in an infinite timeline."
The compass had started at 72 hours and was counting down. The party debated extensively:
- Don't contact their past selves (paradox risk)
- Do warn authorities about the upcoming demon summoning (gives people a head start without altering the party's own decisions)
- Roland wanted to pray to her mother (Celestia) to warn her: "Man, I didn't tell my mom for three days. She's going to be pissed."
- Kavu wanted to visit his village elder
Decision: rest tonight, warn authorities and visit the elder tomorrow.
The Red Dragon Inn — Kidnapping Discovery
While exploring the village, the party discovered cultists actively kidnapping civilians at the Red Dragon Inn. Guards — including Larkin (innkeeper), Nettle (tabaxi), and Bindi — were being hooded with sacks and restrained. At least six captors were operating inside.
The DM ruled: "I'm going to let you get up to here before and I will actually allow you to get a surprise attack because they are not expecting any resistance."
Kavu opened with a 4th-level Command spell targeting four guards — command word: "Prostrate yourselves!" Three failed their Wisdom saves. All four affected guards dropped to their knees. Initiative was rolled and the session ended with combat about to begin.
