Location Toothmaw Cliffs

Summary

The party arrived at Toothmaw Cliffs, a volcanic amphitheater dominated by an active fire vortex churning above a 20-foot-deep pit where Volcathar, a young red dragon, circled while Father Korvan and his fire cult prepared a blood ritual with six bound hostages. Blinded by the vortex's brilliant light, the cultists didn't notice the party's approach through sulfurous fog, granting a tactical advantage. In a desperate battle to save innocents, Volcathar ascended from Young to Adult Red Dragon mid-combat, gaining legendary actions and unleashing devastating power. The dragon's inexplicable fixation on Kavu — repeated aerial grapples, mid-air drops, and Feather Fall rescues — suggests a deeper connection between dragon and kobold. The session ended with Volcathar seizing Kavu and fleeing northward while the remaining party stood wounded and nearly out of spell slots, unable to pursue.

Key Events

Approach and Positioning — The Blinded Cultists

The party discovered Toothmaw Cliffs in a state of frantic ritual preparation. The volcanic amphitheater's centerpiece was a massive fire vortex churning violently 20 feet above a deep pit, its brilliant light casting long shadows across the rocky terrain. Volcathar, a young red dragon, circled below while Father Korvan and approximately 8-12 fire cultists in red masks and robes positioned six bound prisoners on spikes around the vortex perimeter.

The cultists were completely blind to the party's approach. The vortex's intense radiance created a wall of light, and thick sulfurous fog rolled across the cliffs, obscuring the party's movements. The fire cult, disciplined in formation and focused entirely on their ritual preparations, had no idea they were being watched.

The party seized this advantage immediately, debating tactical split formations to divide the dragon's attention and avoid concentrated breath weapon attacks. Haldak cast Protection from Energy (fire) on Roland before combat began, anticipating the inferno to come. Party members drank fire resistance potions, and the group discussed Fireball placement carefully — they needed to maximize damage to cultists while minimizing risk to the hostages they meant to save.

The Opening Assault — Kavu's Radiant Inferno

Combat erupted with Kavu launching a devastating 8d6 radiant-type Fireball at a cluster of cultists. The spell found its mark: four cultists took 28 damage each (failed their saves), and one took 14 damage (success). All five cultists survived the initial blast, but the signal had been given.

Haldak won the initiative roll with a 24, immediately casting Haste on Selene to grant her additional actions. Kefkas rolled 16 and positioned south with darkness coverage and manifest echo support, while the cultists responded at initiative 10. The party had seized action economy advantage.

Roland, protected by Haldak's fire shield, advanced boldly toward the prisoners despite the surrounding danger. Selene, supercharged by Haste, fired her Red Dragon Shortbow with multiple attacks, becoming a whirlwind of arrows. Kefkas contributed hand crossbow attacks and worked to protect innocents.

Father Korvan retaliated with devastating fire magic, meeting the party's assault with cultist fury. The battle intensified around the vortex, each side fighting not just for victory but for different ends: the party to save lives, the cultists to feed power into their ritual.

Hostage Rescue Amid Chaos

Throughout the combat, the party prioritized saving the bound prisoners over dealing maximum damage. This decision defined their strategy and constrained their options. Two hostages were successfully freed from their spikes and rescued by the party, but not all could be saved. Several prisoners were lost to the vortex itself — either slipping into its depths or sacrificed by the cultists as the ritual progressed. The party faced agonizing choices about who could be saved and when, balanced against survival and spell usage.

The ritual proceeded despite the party's interference. As rounds passed, the sacrificial magic continued to feed power into the vortex, driving the transformation that Father Korvan and his cult had orchestrated.

Volcathar's Ascension — From Young to Adult

Mid-battle, the ritual completed its final cycle. The vortex blazed with apocalyptic fury, and something fundamental shifted in the dragon below.

Volcathar ascended before the party's eyes, growing from a Young Red Dragon to an Adult Red Dragon. His form expanded, his scales darkened and deepened in color, and his power amplified exponentially. With this ascension came legendary actions — a terrifying increase in combat capability that meant he could act outside his turn, move across the battlefield, and strike with renewed fury.

The newly ascended dragon immediately fixated on Kavu.

The Dragon's Inexplicable Fixation

What transpired next was both tactical and deeply personal.

Volcathar targeted Kavu exclusively throughout the remainder of the encounter. The dragon executed repeated aerial grapples, snatching the kobold from the ground, climbing into the sky, and then — deliberately, methodically — dropping him hundreds of feet into the air. Each time, Kavu activated Feather Fall, drifting safely downward in a controlled descent while the dragon circled overhead, waiting to grapple him again.

This wasn't random violence. This wasn't the calculated tactics of a dragon defending its ritual or eliminating the highest threat. This was obsession. Fixation. A personal vendetta played out in aerial combat.

No obvious explanation for this exclusive attention emerged during the battle. Why Kavu specifically? Why did the dragon ignore better tactical targets or wounded party members? The answer remains unknown — but the connection between dragon and kobold, whether born of prior relationship, destiny, or something else entirely, seems undeniable.

The Abduction — Kavu's Fate Unknown

As the battle raged and the party's resources dwindled, Volcathar made his final move. The Adult Red Dragon seized Kavu in a powerful grapple and — rather than dropping him again — climbed into the sky with the kobold in his claws and fled northward, away from Toothmaw Cliffs, away from his cultists, away from the battle.

The remaining party stood wounded. Spell slots were nearly depleted. Most healing resources had been consumed. The group had achieved a partial victory — hostages saved, cultists defeated — but at great cost.

They could not pursue.

Father Korvan's fate remained unknown. Had he escaped in the chaos? Was he killed? Did he press on with some backup plan?

And Kavu — alive, apparently, but in the claws of the very dragon they'd come to stop — was gone, carried northward into the unknown. His fate unknown. His purpose in the dragon's fixation unexplained. The party left to wonder: would they see him again?
