He is Othorion's cousin. He led the ambush that nearly killed him. He also made sure it didn't.
Background
Zilnath is a member of House Baenre and, by blood, a cousin to Othorion. He operates in the field on behalf of the House — but his more immediate chain of command runs through Jarlaxle Baenre, who uses him as an instrument requiring both competence and discretion.
He is skilled, methodical, and has been in proximity to Othorion across multiple arcs without ever closing a kill that he demonstrably had the capacity to close.
That is not coincidence.
Campaign History
Arc A — The Road Test (A12)
Zilnath staged a road ambush on the Triboar Trail — a felled tree, a white-haired drow on the other side, and hidden attackers in the trees — on orders from Othorion's uncle, to assess whether Othorion was coasting through exile or actually capable of surviving what was coming. Othorion recognised him and moved ahead of the party to speak with him alone, which was exactly what Zilnath wanted.
The attempted parley collapsed into a real fight. It was genuinely dangerous — the party was pressed hard and Othorion was killed. Haldak Tencloak reversed the death through temporal magic, stopping the rain mid-fall and pulling blood back into the body. Zilnath had not anticipated that variable.
He incorporated it rather than escalating. He halted the fight, drove his sword into the log, and acknowledged that Othorion had passed the test. He noted that the companions were not disposable — they were the reason Othorion was still standing. He revealed that the accusation against Othorion may connect to deeper power structures in drow society, not just a personal charge. He promised to report to the uncle that Othorion was proving capable of surviving long enough to stand for his innocence.
Othorion and Zilnath sealed the encounter with a blooded handshake. The other drow cleared the log from the road.
From the party's perspective: a genuine assassination attempt that turned into an acknowledgement.
The reality: the test was ordered by Othorion's uncle — and Jarlaxle's position with the Ships of Luskan creates additional political pressure to be seen acting against someone who publicly used the Baenre name. Zilnath went hard enough to make it real, but had the outcome already in mind if Othorion proved himself.
The accusation: Zilnath confronted Othorion about the murder charge — the crime that sent Othorion into exile. Whether this accusation is genuine, politically motivated, or itself part of Jarlaxle's cover, is unresolved.
Arc A — The Road Ambush (A13)
On the final stretch of road before Phandalin, Zilnath led another House Baenre scouting party against the party — this time an unambiguous ambush rather than a formalised test. Othorion moved ahead of the party to investigate suspicious movement in the treeline and was swarmed.
Haldak cast Darkness over Othorion's position. The drow retreated. The party concluded Haldak's spell had driven them off.
The retreat was deliberate. Zilnath had the kill again and declined to take it.
Arc B — Luskan (B07–B08)
By the time the party reached Luskan, Zilnath had positioned himself at One-Eyed Jax and established a cover operation as an organiser of underground gladiatorial combat — the circuit the party entered in Session B08. He had visibility on the whole party again here.
His presence in Luskan was almost certainly coordinated with Jarlaxle's broader operation. What he observed, and what he reported, is not clear.
Personality
Zilnath has the patience of someone who has been given contradictory instructions and found a way to follow all of them. He attacks when told to attack. He pulls the strike when it matters. He is capable of holding a long game without letting it show on his face — which is exactly why Jarlaxle uses him.
He has not expressed, at any point visible to the party, whether he believes in what he's doing. That is probably deliberate.
