Summary
Kavu erupts at the party for their cowardice during Xynia Vandree's escape, delivering personal criticisms to each companion and confessing his own fear of fire. After painful reconciliations, Selene scouts the Grand Chasm and encounters two elder myconids — Moosh and Spore — on pilgrimage, who mention a shortcut: a warm, wet passage through a fallen tower that takes 3–5 days instead of 30. The party enters the fallen Society of Brilliance tower, which is swallowed by something alive as they explore it. They discover they are inside a massive living creature — navigating through its lung (with carved text: "As Gris was here, the Lung God breathes") and discovering its heart. A parasitic dire roundworm erupts from the lung wall. Combat begins with Roland and Kefkas unconscious from a previous stalactite incident.
Key Events
Kavu's Accusation — "You Are Cowards"
Kavu walked away from the group, returned, and delivered individual accusations:
- Selene: Her "fire soul" from Icewind Dale has become "small and timid" from captivity
- Roland: Acts as a passive observer despite divine fury; lacks initiative
- Othorion: Learned the wrong lessons from dangerous uncles; paralyzed by fear of punishment
- Haldak: Keeps trying to befriend enemies instead of protecting the group; afraid of being alone
- Cass: Despite Kavu's efforts to free her from slavery, she hesitated to aid him — even pointed weapons at him during the escape
His justification: Xynia Vandree was being sentenced to unjust death, and he chose to let her escape rather than watch her die. His accusation: "You all could have reached out and pulled me off. Or could have reached out and held her down. But you all just hesitated or acted alone."
Personal revelation: Kavu confessed that despite breathing fire, he is afraid of fire itself. He respects fire's non-discriminatory destructive power and its capacity for renewal alongside destruction.
Reconciliations
Othorion admitted fear and promised: "I am going to make this up to you." He explained that killing Xynia openly would have created dire political consequences under drow house law.
Lireal encouraged Othorion: "You need to understand you're not alone. You have us behind. And if your gut takes you somewhere dangerous and it was the wrong choice, then we will help you."
Haldak approached Kavu and apologized, admitting fear paralyzed him.
Moosh and Spore — The Myconid Shortcut
Selene, scouting ahead, encountered Moosh and Spore — two elderly myconids on pilgrimage to the Long Chasm to merge with Oromycos (the Elder Myconid). They recognized Stool from "mushroom cartons back home."
They mentioned a shortcut they'd discovered: a warm, wet passage through a fallen tower — 3–5 days instead of 30 via the cliff path. They described "mini softies" on both sides of a bridge and a "wrinkly opening" leading through soft passages.
Ration check forced the decision: the party had only ~119 total rations (~12 days for 10 people) — not enough for the 30-day cliff route. They took the shortcut.
The Society of Brilliance Tower
The party found a fallen research tower — bearing the eye-and-rays-of-light symbol of the Society of Brilliance — wedged horizontally at a cliff entrance. Inside: slime-covered walls, warm stone, alchemical equipment, and a book about seismic irregularities. Kavu and Cass both rolled natural 20s on History to identify the Society of Brilliance.
The tower groaned and tilted, forcing three rounds of Dexterity saves:
- Round 1: Cass failed and slid prone; Othorion made a nat 20 Sleight of Hand — their cuffs caught, they flipped acrobatically, and both landed standing hand-in-hand
- Round 2: Tower at 45 degrees; Kavu failed, taking 4 bludgeoning; Haldak failed, taking 6 bludgeoning
- Round 3: The tower broke through into a vast chamber — walls of flesh, humid air reeking of decay, rhythmic pulsing everywhere
Inside the Creature
The party realized they were not in a cave. They were inside something alive and vast.
Kavu pressed his head against the wall and heard breathing on the other side. Examining a large organ, they found carved text: "As Gris was here, the Lung God breathes."
Cass rolled History and identified the scale of possibilities: ancient red dragon, kraken, astral dreadnought, tarrasque, or the world serpent Jormungandr. Kavu, speaking Draconic to Lireal, named it: "A great red worm dragon."
The lung was punctured by the fallen tower — a sucking chest wound. The creature was already wounded.
The Heart Chamber
Cass dashed through an exit from the lung into a passage leading to the creature's heart — a massive muscular organ. Carved text read: "Heart God, Most Powerful." She made a DC 21 Acrobatics check (rolled 22) to grab handholds while dinner-plate-sized red blood cells battered her.
She shouted back: "The fucking heart is here!"
Dire Roundworm Combat (In Progress)
A colossal dire roundworm burrowed out of the lung wall — a parasitic creature living inside the larger organism. Kavu's Medicine check identified it.
- Roundworm attacks Kavu: Whip attack — miss. Clasper attack — miss.
- Status: Ongoing; party fighting in the lung while Roland and Kefkas remain unconscious from the previous stalactite incident

Combat & Encounters
Encounter 1 — Tower Collapse (Skill Challenge)
- 3 rounds of DEX saves as the tower tilted, broke, and fell into the creature
- Damage: Kavu 4 bludgeoning, Haldak 6 bludgeoning
- Highlight: Othorion nat 20 Sleight of Hand to catch Cass mid-fall
Encounter 2 — Dire Roundworm (In Progress)
- Enemy: Colossal dire roundworm (parasitic, burrowed from lung wall)
- Initiative: Selene → Kavu → Haldak → Othorion → Cass (in heart) → Lireal → Lung (initiative 20) → Roundworm
- Round 1: Roundworm attacks Kavu — whip miss, clasper miss
- Status: Ongoing. Roland and Kefkas unconscious and not participating.
Party Notes
- Kavu: Erupted at party over cowardice; confessed fear of fire; performing emotional leadership; identified dire roundworm via Medicine; took 4 damage from tower collapse
- Othorion: Defended political reasoning for Xynia's escape; made incredible nat 20 acrobatics save with Cass; promised Kavu to do better
- Haldak: Apologized to Kavu; cast Aid on three party members; took 6 damage from tower collapse; suggested using Stool as bait (rejected)
- Selene: Scouted ahead; found Moosh and Spore; carries 50 feet of rope; fell prone from lung expansion
- Cass: Dashed into the heart chamber; DC 21 Acrobatics success; angry at party for hesitation
- Lireal: Encouraged Othorion to trust the party; carried Stool toward the group
- Roland: Unconscious (stalactite incident from previous session)
- Kefkas: Unconscious (stalactite incident); has 52 rations and poison arrows in Bag of Holding
- Stool: Guided by instinct toward home — "Stool go home, that way"
Threads Opened / Advanced
- Xynia's Escape (ADVANCED): Now racing the party to Neverlight Grove on her lizard mount; the Grand Chasm descent would take 10+ days on foot but the shortcut bypasses it
- Party Cohesion (ADVANCED): Kavu's accusations created deep fractures; individual reconciliations have begun but trust remains fragile
- Inside the Creature (OPENED): Party is inside a massive living organism — possibly a great red worm dragon; the lung is punctured by the tower; a parasitic dire roundworm is attacking; the heart chamber is accessible
- Society of Brilliance (OPENED): Research organization with towers in the Underdark studying seismic activity; their tower fell into the creature
- Previous Visitors (OPENED): Carved text ("As Gris was here") confirms others have been inside the creature before — and left graffiti
- Ration Pressure: ~119 rations for 10 people (~12 days); shortcut must work or the party faces starvation
- Neverlight Grove: Destination unchanged; myconid shortcut theoretically gets them there in 3–5 days
