Session Session A01 — Goblin Ambush
Role Appeared as a shaggy red wolf; helped Pip and the party

A man with a legendary reputation that he did not entirely earn — because Roland De Fey borrowed his name and face and was significantly more interesting with it. The man himself is a gentle giant of the forest who needed help learning how to people. Pip called him Syrup Beard.

Background

Kelvin's past is shrouded in mystery, and he carries a profound sense of disconnection from the world he cannot remember. He has no recollection of parents, family, or community. The only thing that has ever felt like home is the wild — the untamed expanse of nature that he instinctively belongs to.

Even his name is an enigmatic fragment of the forest's song. "Ke-el-ven" echoes through the woods like a distant call. "Farlight" describes the beacons he glimpsed while traversing the rugged terrain of the Sword Mountains — he didn't know that was a family name until the world told him so.

What has always remained vivid is his deep respect for — and fear of — fire. He believes those who manipulate fire with magic are tapping into something they cannot truly understand. This belief shaped his view of the world for years. He does not know why fire fills him with unease in a way that goes beyond philosophy. (He is, of course, a Wildfire Druid. The forest has a sense of irony.)

He is a kind and gentle soul, deeply attuned to nature and all living things. He sees beauty in the harshest aspects of the wilderness and understands that life and death are intertwined, just as light and darkness coexist. For a long time, his only companions were animals and forest creatures. He longed for something more but kept his distance from people — especially those who threw fire around like it was theirs to own.

The Forge Wardens changed that.

True Past

How He Joined — The Goblin Ambush

Kelvin's introduction to the party came during a goblin ambush. He appeared not as a man but as a shaggy red wolf, leaping into the fight alongside Pip and the others.

He was, to put it gently, new to people. Pip named him "Syrup Beard" — because he was like a giant baby who needed help learning how to human. The name stuck affectionately. Pip took him under her wing and helped him navigate the entirely foreign concept of society.

Key Moments

Session Event
A01 First seen as a shaggy red wolf during the goblin ambush; helped Pip and the party; Pip names him Syrup Beard
A09 Kills Elandir Whisperwind — a monk sitting on a log in a stream who invited the party to attack him all at once; Kelvin wild-shaped into a warhorse and kicked him once in the head; shod hoof, skull caved in, instant death; party buries him and continues; leads scouting reconnaissance of goblin cave site
A11 Gives his own name and Othorion's name to Skittlebump the fox; loses access to his own name (experienced as ringing absence); meets Titania at the Sister Spring; wakes on the Material Plane with a collar around his neck that restores his name — Titania's property, now on his throat

The Sea Seraph

Kelvin's flagship is the Sea Seraph (originally called the Azure Maiden), captured from Idris "Blacktooth" Ferron. The ship has an enchanted figurehead: a celestial angel granting navigation bonuses and enhanced speed.

The Destiny Arc

The Kelvin Fairlight Reputation

Most of the legendary deeds attributed to "Kelvin Fairlight" across the Sword Coast were performed by Roland De Fey, a noble of the Summer Court who traveled using Kelvin's identity. The real Kelvin is slowly learning he has a reputation he didn't earn.

Kelvin's Kids

Kelvin has extensive illegitimate children across the Sword Coast (again, largely Roland's doing). See Kelvin's Kids for the full roster by city. The Fae Courts are tracking this — Kelvin owes 1,375+ platinum in Fae debts, has 32 children, and both Titania and Mab want him to appear at court.

Current Status — Where Is Kelvin?

During the voyage of the Sea Seraph, the party received word that Phandalin was surrounded by something magical. Pip and Drizzle had been sent home from Neverwinter and were en route.

Kelvin, unwilling to wait, arranged emergency transport with Caladorn and Arveiaturace and flew back to Phandalin immediately — leaving the party behind to continue north.

The party has not seen him since.
