Shard of the Astral Sea
A crystalline fragment of solidified otherworldliness, shimmering with silver mist suspended within its form — not a shard of stone, but of the very fabric of another plane made manifest. When attuned, it allows a sorcerer to step sideways through space after channeling metamagic.

A crystalline shard no larger than a closed fist, yet dense with otherworldly presence. Silver mist swirls perpetually within the transparent crystal structure — not flowing like a living thing, but suspended as if the moment of creation has been frozen inside. The surface is cool to the touch and seems to absorb light differently depending on the angle, producing an otherworldly shimmer that borders on unnatural.
Description
The Shard of the Astral Sea is solidified material from the Astral Plane itself — brought into Toril's reality and somehow retained its form despite being separated from its native cosmology. It should not exist in this world. Yet it does.
The silver mist within is not vapor or liquid — it is a visible manifestation of the Astral Plane's essential nature, trapped in crystalline form. Those who study such things find the shard difficult to categorize: it is neither wholly material nor wholly ethereal, existing in a state between both.
Known Properties
Spellcasting Focus
When attuned, the Shard functions as a spellcasting focus for any sorcerer. Unlike mundane focuses, it grants a sense of connection to the Astral Plane itself — many sorcerers report that spells cast through it have a subtle otherworldly quality, as if the magic is flowing from beyond the material plane rather than from within the caster.
Metamagic Teleport
The shard's signature ability is a product of its astral origin. After a sorcerer uses a metamagic ability to modify a spell, they may instantly teleport up to 30 feet to any unoccupied space they can see. This teleportation is seamless, as if the caster briefly existed in the Astral Plane rather than the material world.
The ability costs no additional resource — it is a natural consequence of channeling metamagic through an item that exists partially in another plane of existence.
Attunement Requirements
The Shard requires attunement from a sorcerer, completed during a short rest. The attunement process demands a DC 12 Arcana check. Those who fail the check may attempt again, but the process is unsettling — prolonged contact with the Astral Plane's native matter creates a sense of dislocation.
Once attuned, the bond between sorcerer and shard becomes nearly inseparable. Attempting to break attunement is possible but disturbing, as if severing a connection that was never meant to be broken.
Origin & Discovery
The Shard was discovered in the Tarrasque's digestive tract during Session C15, among the creature's accumulated loot and partially-digested matter. It first manifested as a "Blue Crystal Stone" — an unidentified artifact among the Tarrasque's remains.
When handled or examined, the blue crystal shattered on contact, the destruction seeming final and absolute. Yet the destruction was not permanent: the shattered crystal reformed almost immediately, reconstituting itself into the current shard form.
Attunement History
Selene attempted attunement to the Shard during Session C15. The attunement process succeeded (presumably with a successful Arcana check), and Selene has maintained the connection since. As the primary sorcerer in the party's composition, the attunement seems natural — though others may wonder what would happen if the Shard were offered to a different sorcerer.
The nature of the item's connection to Selene specifically, versus its connection to any sorcerer in general, remains somewhat unclear.
Mysteries & Unknowns
- Why does the Shard exist in the Tarrasque? Is it recent acquisition or ancient cargo?
- The blue crystal form it first took — is that the shard's "true" appearance, or was it a transformation caused by the Tarrasque's digestive environment?
- How many uses does the Metamagic Teleport ability have per day, if any? Does it have limits?
- Can a non-sorcerer attune to the Shard, or is the sorcerer-only requirement absolute?
- Does the Shard grant any passive benefits beyond the spellcasting focus and teleportation ability?
- Is there a "price" for using the astral teleportation ability — any risk of leaving something behind or drawing something through?
