First Engaged Session A17 (approach)
Assault Completed Sessions A17–A18
Part of Cragmaw Castle (complex)

A goblin fortress deep in the Neverwinter Wood, serving as the stronghold of King Grol and the base of operations for the Black Spider's goblin allies. Gundren Rockseeker was held captive here under orders from Nezznar before the Forge Wardens assaulted the castle to secure his rescue.

Geography and Approach

Cragmaw Castle lies in the wilderness interior, accessible only via overgrown forest roads. The location was disclosed to the party by Mosk the bugbear, who gave rough directions after his capture and interrogation. The approach is marked by remnants of ancient stonework — an old road lined with black stones that deliver personalized magical messages to those who pass. The path ascends toward the castle's position.

The Garrison

The castle housed a mixed force of goblins and bugbears under goblin command. Before the assault, Kelvin conducted reconnaissance via wildshape, returning with detailed intelligence of the garrison composition, defense positions, and internal layout. This reconnaissance proved critical to planning the assault.

The Assault — Sessions A17–A18

The party approached cautiously but was ambushed by goblin and bugbear scouts in the woods before reaching the castle proper. A running fight saw Roland impaled through the abdomen with a javelin — a wound that left a permanent scar across his upper back and side. The party continued into the castle assault undeterred.

The interior assault resulted in the defeat of King Grol and his forces. Gundren Rockseeker was found alive and freed from captivity. The Black Spider's goblin network was effectively dismantled by this victory.

Current Status

With the goblin leadership eliminated, Cragmaw Castle no longer functions as a coherent stronghold. The structure remains, but its tactical importance to the campaign has been resolved.

The Javelin Wound

Roland carries a permanent scar through his upper back and abdomen from the javelin impalement during the woodland ambush before the castle. The wound will not fully heal and serves as a lasting reminder of the cost of the Gundren rescue.
