Sylphrena's Lantern

A brass lantern that emits pale blue light and contains the preserved soul of a woman who has been waiting inside it since the fall of Netheril. It is not a prison. It is a lifeboat.

Description

An ancient brass lantern of Netherese craftsmanship, suffused with faint pale blue light that does not flicker. The light is Sylphrena — her silhouette visible within, her voice audible to whoever carries it.

The lantern was created by Sandor, Sylphrena's mentor, as a last-ditch measure when their enclave was destroyed. He used it to preserve her soul when everything else was about to be lost. It has survived millennia since then, protected first by the Netherese chest's preservative enchantments and then by a bound guardian specter.

Properties

Arcana Guidance (3/day). Sylphrena can grant advantage on Arcana checks. Usable 3 times per day.

Harpy Song Resistance. The lantern provides resistance or immunity to harpy song effects — confirmed in the A09 encounter.

Visions of Netheril. The attuned bearer can receive visions of Netherese history through Sylphrena's memories.

Permanent Attunement. Roland's bond to the lantern does not appear to be casually severable. Hamun Kost interpreted this as a sign of a curse or dangerously unfamiliar ancient magic.

The Attunement Warning

When Roland attuned to the lantern in Session A09, Hamun Kost reacted with genuine alarm. He warned:

• The permanent nature of the bond suggested a curse or an ancient form of Netherese magic he did not recognise
• Roland might be in grave danger if the attunement fully manifested
• His recommendation (declined): the party should stay away from Roland, kill him if necessary before the curse spreads, and send the lantern on afterward

The party did not accept this assessment as final. Sylphrena's own view on the permanence and nature of the bond has not yet been fully articulated.

History

Created by Sandor during the fall of a Netherese flying enclave. The lantern was sealed inside a Preserved Netherese Chest and left in a hidden chamber beneath Old Owl Well, guarded by a specter bound to protect it. The chest's preservative inscriptions protected both lantern and contents from the passage of millennia.

The chest itself was recovered by the party alongside the lantern.
