A Lord's Alliance agent sent to Phandalin ahead of Sildar Hallwinter. Iarno was tasked with establishing a line of credit and handling preliminary affairs for the Alliance's operations on the Sword Coast. Instead, he saw an opportunity and seized it — transforming himself into Glasstaff, the leader of the Redbrand gang, and the instrument of the Black Spider's will in Phandalin.
History with the Party
The Deception Revealed
The party encountered references to "Glasstaff" almost immediately upon arriving in Phandalin — a mysterious leader of the Redbrand gang terrorizing the town. The identity of Glasstaff remained concealed for several sessions, known only to Sildar Hallwinter and a handful of others.
Capture at Tresendar Manor — Sessions A04-A05
The party infiltrated Tresendar Manor, the Redbrand hideout, in Sessions A04-A05. In the depths of the manor, they discovered Iarno Albrek — Glasstaff — and captured him alive. The revelation that the Redbrand leader was a Lord's Alliance agent gone rogue was a significant betrayal for Sildar and a turning point in the party's understanding of Phandalin's political situation.
Iarno had been working directly for the Black Spider (Nezznar) while maintaining his Lord's Alliance cover. He possessed knowledge of Nezznar's operations, the Redbrand network, and the broader conspiracy targeting Wave Echo Cave.
Transfer and Murder
Following his capture, the party was tasked with escorting Iarno to Neverwinter for trial under Lord's Alliance jurisdiction. The escort mission represented a significant responsibility — a prisoner of considerable value and information.
However, the journey to Neverwinter went wrong. Before the trial could occur, Zhentarim agents murdered Iarno on the road. Whether the assassination was ordered to silence him, executed as a power play, or motivated by some other faction interest remains unresolved. What is clear: he never stood trial, and his death left many questions unanswered.
Unresolved Threads
- Who ordered Iarno's murder, and why? Was it the Zhentarim proper, a rival faction, or someone else?
- What information died with him? What did Nezznar tell him about the broader conspiracy?
- Was his murder an attempt to silence him, or something else entirely?
- Did anyone in Neverwinter (Vajra Safahr, the Lord's Alliance hierarchy) know or care about his death?
