She was an archivist who spent her life preserving knowledge. When her world ended, her mentor preserved her instead. She has been inside the lantern ever since — waiting for someone she could talk to.
Background
Sylphrena was an archivist of ancient Netheril — one of the scholars responsible for cataloguing, protecting, and transmitting the magical knowledge of a flying enclave. When the enclave fell, her mentor Sandor made a desperate decision: rather than let Sylphrena die with the archive, he used a brass lantern as a vessel and preserved her soul within it. The lantern survived the disaster. Sylphrena has been inside it ever since.
She is not a ghost. She is not an elemental. She is a preserved soul — intelligent, articulate, fully herself, and entirely aware of how much time has passed since the world she knew ceased to exist.
Discovery
The lantern was sealed inside a chest in a hidden chamber beneath Old Owl Well, guarded by a specter bound to protect it. The party reached it in Session A09 after clearing the lower compound.
When Roland Riel attuned to the lantern, the bond gave him a vision from Sylphrena's perspective — the collapse of the enclave, Sandor's final act, the lantern closing around her. Roland's attunement appears to be permanent, or at least not easily severed. Hamun Kost warned that this might indicate a curse.
Personality
Sylphrena is precise, patient, and unexpectedly dry. Centuries of waiting inside a brass lantern have not made her bitter — or if they have, she keeps it well-managed. She is an archivist by nature: she observes, categorises, and asks careful questions before forming conclusions.
Her sharpest moment in the party's company so far was the argument over Hamun Kost's claim: she pointed out, with no particular drama, that surrendering her as part of a treasure deal would be the sale of a person. The party found this persuasive.
She misses her archive. She does not say so often.
What She Knows
Sylphrena has direct knowledge of:
- Netherese magical theory — including pre-Spellplague arcane forms that no living scholar has access to
- The history of her enclave — its contents, purpose, and what destroyed it
- Sandor — her mentor; his methods, motivations, and the mechanics of the lantern's creation
- The well and its history — she has context for what Old Owl Well was before it became a ruin

The Ythryn Problem
Threads
- What does Sylphrena want, long-term? She is a scholar without an archive and a person without a body.
- Can she be restored? What would that cost, and does she want it?
- Roland's attunement — Kost read it as a curse. Is it? The Ythryn arc may provide a different kind of answer.
- What does she know about Arthindol, the wizard who built the tower at Old Owl Well? She has context the party has not yet asked about.
- Ythryn — the city will try to use her. Whether it succeeds, partially succeeds, or is resisted entirely depends on the saves — and on whether Roland notices in time.
