Summary

The session concluded the Old Owl Well delve — confronting the guardian specter, discovering Sylphrena, and working through the thorny question of whether she and the lantern had to be handed over to Hamun Kost. The second half was a brutal harpy ambush in cold driving rain on the road north, with the cart animals nearly lured to disaster.

Key Events

The Final Chamber

The party resumed in the last unexplored room: a collapsed chamber with a pool, rubble, and an undead presence Roland could sense but not see. They moved carefully — testing the floor, debating approaches — before Roland challenged the spirit directly to reveal itself.

The Guardian Specter

Roland used Divine Sense and detected an undead presence between the party and the chest. He used Persuasion (rolled 19) to challenge the spirit to reveal itself. A specter emerged, positioned between the party and the chest. It read less like a wandering undead than a bound sentinel — focused especially on Roland, looking between him and Kavu when both approached. It did not react to the name "Sandor."

Initiative: Othorion 20, Roland 19, Kavu 19, Jonah 12, Kelvin 6, Specter 6. The fight was over almost instantly — Othorion opened with a hand crossbow (5 piercing, halved to 2 against semi-ethereal form), then Kavu used Purifying Flame (Channel Divinity) with an inspiration die, dealing 24 radiant damage — killing the specter in a single devastating hit before it could act.

Sylphrena and the Lantern

The chest had magical Celestial runes inscribed on it. Kavu heard a young woman's voice calling "Help me!" repeatedly from inside. The chest held a brass lantern suffused with pale blue light — and inside, the silhouette and voice of Sylphrena, an ancient Netherese archivist whose soul had been preserved when her enclave fell. She was articulate and clearly a thinking person, which immediately turned the discovery from dungeon loot into an ethical problem.

Jonah rolled a nat 20 Performance check describing the Celestial runes to the group, earning the Linguist feat as a downtime activity (Celestial as forced language choice).

Her opening request: "What I want is for you wonderful, young, healthy, virile young men to... keep me safe and take me on a journey in which I eventually regain my freedom as a living sentient being in a body of flesh and blood." When someone said "he's smart," she corrected them: "I was an archivist."

She'd been trapped for thousands of years and didn't initially know she was in a lantern. She described the space as feeling "both big and small, very bright but also dark" — she could see everything around her in blue-tinted grayscale. When asked about what fire looked like to her, she engaged in philosophical debate about whether fire is blue, white, yellow, or purple. Kavu's response: "Fire is all those things."

Roland attuned to Sylphrena's Lantern. The attunement was immediate and permanent — the item took a permanent attunement slot. The bond gave him a vision from Sylphrena's perspective: the collapse of a Netherese flying enclave, her mentor Sandor using the lantern as a vessel to preserve her soul when the archive was about to be destroyed — "an archivist devoted to the preservation of Netheril's vast knowledge, deep within the bowels of the outpost, surrounded by ancient tomes and artifacts."

Sylphrena also noticed Roland's armour inscription and joked about it, saying it read "Lion Princess of Light." When Roland pointed out her name was on the chest, she retorted: "At least the name on my chest matches my name... The name on your chest doesn't match yours, so judge not."

Kavu proposed hiring Sylphrena to hire them as adventurers, with payment once she regained a body — creating a mutual obligation structure.

The Netherese chest was also taken. Kavu's Detect Magic revealed it was infused with necromantic energy — not harmful, but preservative. The party speculated it functioned like Gentle Repose, protecting its contents against time and decay. High-quality Netherese craftsmanship.

The Contract Problem — Sylphrena's Argument

The party debated whether the lantern and its occupant had to be surrendered to Kost under the delving agreement. Sylphrena made the sharpest argument herself, reading the contract directly: "If this individual has entered under contract with you and you are present in this land where this land's laws are the highest authority... you can claim that a sentient being does not fall under the agreement's provision for magical items. Not an item, but instead a living entity, and while the item does contain me, to sell the item would also be selling me, which would violate the laws of the land — because that would be slavery." She noted that even sentient weapons occupy a grey category the contract hadn't accounted for, and that this oversight was the crack through which the argument ran. The party accepted her analysis.

Kost's Warning

When Roland told Kost he was permanently attuned to the lantern, Kost physically stepped back. "Do you remember when I said that you should be careful attuning to things?" He then told the rest of the party: "Everybody step back from your friend." His diagnosis: "I think you're cursed. I think that you have some sort of curse, and the fact that it is not immediately displaying only worries me more — that it is incredibly powerful." Kavu used Insight to check whether this was theatre. It wasn't. Kost genuinely believed every word.

When asked what the party should do, Kost offered a reference: "Have you never read the play about the little boy and his pet slod that went rabid and he had to magic missile it in the face? Old Purple." When the party hadn't heard of it, he explained fondly: "It is a wonderful coming-of-age tale about the tragedy of friendship." His practical advice: "If you want to survive, be nowhere near him — or kill him before it happens." He then told Roland to back out of the tent slowly: "Excuse me, Roland, you can back away slowly out of the tent, please."

On Kost's departure, he asked that if Roland died and the curse passed, the party return the lantern to him at his forwarding address: Asundor Manor. He departed Old Owl Well with his Netherese texts and research. The party declined to accept necromancer doom-prophecy as settled medical fact.

Departure — Heading for Conyberry

The party left Old Owl Well with Sylphrena still in their possession. Their immediate plan: head north toward Conyberry and the area of Agatha the banshee — partly to seek knowledge about Roland's attunement and Sylphrena's situation before matters escalated.

The Harpy Ambush

Travel became miserable fast. Near-freezing torrential rain, rough terrain, and a failed Survival check produced a harpy encounter near a river. Five harpies (DM-tracked as A through E) were washing in the river while singing their luring song.

Harpy Song Mechanics: DC 11 Wisdom saving throw to resist charm; charmed targets are incapacitated and must move toward the harpy by the most direct route each turn. Succeeding against one harpy grants permanent immunity to that harpy's song — but not the others. Covering ears prevents charm but uses both hands (no attacks possible). Removing hands forces an immediate new save.

Who Was Charmed:

Key Combat Actions:

The fight was complicated by the vertical mobility of the harpies, the rain, the river depth (knee-high), and the cascading charm saves across the party. The party held together and drove the harpies back — but harpies B and D escaped rather than fighting to the death. Bella's harness was damaged and required repair. The cart animals Benji and Bella were nearly drawn into the river.
